IEC Overview
What is Import Export Code (IEC)?
Import Export Code, commonly called IEC, is a unique 10-digit business identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). It is used to identify importers and exporters in India and is one of the core registrations for cross-border trade.
Why it matters: IEC is commonly needed for customs clearance, shipping goods across borders, and receiving or sending foreign currency for trade-related transactions.
The process is online, and the certificate can be printed from the DGFT portal after approval. Once issued, IEC does not require annual renewal, which makes it a one-time compliance step for most businesses.
Who should apply for IEC?
Businesses and professionals that plan to import goods, export goods, or participate in international trade should obtain IEC before starting operations. It is especially relevant for manufacturers, traders, exporters, e-commerce sellers, and service providers working with foreign clients.
- Businesses importing raw materials, machinery, or finished goods
- Exporters of products, software, or services
- E-commerce sellers shipping internationally
- Freelancers and service providers receiving foreign payments
- Traders using customs and banking channels for international movement of goods
